Travel eSIM guide: what to check before you buy
eSIMTrip is an online store for prepaid travel data eSIMs: pick a country, region or global plan, pay from your account credit, and install the eSIM on your phone by scanning a QR code, with no physical SIM card and no roaming bill.
How a travel eSIM differs from roaming and a local SIM
Roaming keeps your home number on a foreign network and bills you through your home operator, often per day or per megabyte. A local SIM card is cheap but means finding a shop, showing a passport in many countries and swapping cards in a small tray. A travel eSIM sits between the two: you buy a prepaid data plan for the destination at home, install it in two minutes, and it connects to a local partner network when you arrive.

How much data do you need?
Maps, messages and ride apps use little: around 100 to 200MB a day for most people. Social media with photos and some video calls push that to 500MB to 1GB a day, and streaming or a laptop on hotspot can use several gigabytes. For a week of normal city travel, 3 to 5GB is usually comfortable; for two weeks or for work on the road, take 10 to 20GB or an unlimited plan with a daily full-speed amount.
Fixed data or unlimited?
Fixed data plans give a set amount (from 1GB up to 50GB) to use any time within the validity days, and they cost the least per trip. Unlimited plans run for a number of days with a full-speed allowance every day (3GB on most destinations, 5GB on some) and keep working at 1 Mbps after that until midnight. Heavy users and travelers who share a hotspot usually save with unlimited.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to one carrier (dial *#06# and look for an EID).
- The plan covers every country on your route, or you pick a regional plan.
- The days match your stay; validity starts at the first connection abroad, not at purchase.
- You will be on WiFi when you install, ideally the day before you fly.
- You know where to switch the data line and data roaming on (our install guide shows each screen).
